It
was less than a year ago she recalls, when alone in prayer,
She had no thoughts of tomorrow, no worries nor care.
Promised to Joseph she was ready to be a good wife,
Unaware of the upheaval that would change her life.
Suddenly an angel appeared, she heard his great voice
And a light so dazzling she had to close her eyes.
God had spoken, Gabriel said, she was to bear a child,
How could it be she asked, she had never been defiled.
God’s spirit would overwhelm her and the deed done,
She feared Joseph’s doubts, to him she could not run.
Joseph, at first wanted to free her in quiet and calm,
In a dream he was told there was no cause for alarm.
Her journey to Elizabeth’s home was filled with joy,
The one who leapt in her cousin’s womb, it’d be a boy.
Nearing her time for birth, to Bethlehem she had to go,
Joseph by her side, their journey was arduous and slow.
Inns full; many were there for the census of the nation,
A manger in a cold cave they found, the one safe haven.
Weary and dark the night, she needed a place for rest,
For the time had come to deliver God’s incarnate quest.
Now, her baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lies on the straw,
The cows and sheep stay near and gaze at Him in awe.
Three magi guided by a star bring gifts of grandeur,
At His feet they place gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Shepherds adore and in the heavens angels give glory,
Mary prays for protection from King Herod’s jealousy.
So she muses, will her Child be a king or a mere man,
And wonders if He’ll grow up according to God’s holy plan.
