It
was not called Christmas then, but
We
recall Joseph and Mary’s journey,
In
Bethlehem they stayed that night
We
rejoice at the birth of their Baby.
The angels who appear before shepherds
And to God gave honour and glory,
The Magi from the East with their gifts
Aren’t theirs, a magnificent story?
King Herod on his throne in Judaea
He is full of conceit and jealousy,
His pretence in welcoming the Child
How we shudder at his hypocrisy.
When the wise men don’t return
The king rants loud and furiously,
He plans the demise of the new-born
For greater than him, none there be.
He orders his soldiers to go in haste
To Bethlehem and its nearby vicinity,
And kill every male child below two
Without showing any kindness or pity.
Let’s remember the innocent children
Who were massacred inhumanely,
‘Loud mourning and weeping heard’,
Cause a cruel king showed no mercy.
Matthew 2:16-19
