Enlightenment Day (Wesak)

A holiday it has always been;
to relax, enjoy, make a call,
Hadn't given a thought, what
Wesak meant to others at all.

Till I read about Buddha’s life
and the sacrifice he made,
How he left everything behind
to find meaning in life instead.

For he had chanced upon the
sufferings a human could get,
They were old age, poverty,
sickness, all ending in death.

Though he was a prince with
wealth and a King to become,
He left his home, a palace,
his beautiful wife and son.

Quietly at night he stole out
a sleeping family, unaware,
He walked in desperation,
to search for truth out there.

Poverty, suffering, pain and
death, He couldn’t take it in,
Where did they come from?
He meditated from within.

Owning nothing as he travelled,
He sat under a Bodhi tree,
Till the truth descended upon Him,
He was enlightened and free.

He learnt the law that governed
the cycles of births and demises,
That pain and suffering evolved
from mankind's selfish desires.

He preached the Wheel of Truth,
thousands of years ago,
Now millions give him homage
at His feet, they adore.
