Poem Types

ABC 
Lines 1 to 4 - words, phrases or clauses.  
The first word of each line is in alphabetical order.
Line 5 is one sentence, beginning with any letter.
(The first letter in each line spells out a word)

(Words and phrases starting with the same alphabet) 

Ballade 
The ‘true’ ballade -three eight-line stanzas and a concluding four-line stanza with a consistent meter. 

Rhyme scheme is ababbcbC ababbcbC ababbcbC bcbC where C is a refrain. 

Double Etheres 

(One syllable line ending with 10 syllable lines)

Haiku 
(Three-line poem (5, 7, 5 syllables). Non-rhymed)


Homonyms 
(Are words that are spelled the same (homographs), pronounced the same (homophones) but have different meanings.)

(Exaggeration of words)

Kyrielle Poems 
(The last line in every stanza is repeated) 

Limericks 
(Humorous poem in five lines) 

Loops 
(In a loop poem the last word in the previous line is continued in the next line)

Minute 
(12 lines of 60 syllables in iambic meter. 3 stanzas - 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4 syllables. Rhyme scheme - aabb, ccdd, eeff.)

Onomatopoeias
(Words made from "sounds")

Rhyme Royal 
(Seven lines, usually in iambic pentameter. Rhyme scheme is a-b-a-b-b-c-c.)


Shardoma 
6 lines, 3/5/3/3/7/5 syllables

Sonnets
(3 stanzas and a couplet. 
Rhyming scheme : abab, cdcd, efef, gg. 
In iambic pentameter)

Trochaic Octameter 
(Trochee - a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one. Trochaic Octameter : 8 trochees per line
